Emcore Fiber Optics in Albuquerque attacked by a gunman

In Albuquerque at 9 am local time, a 911 call reported a shooter at Emcore Fiber Optics. Reports still do not tell precisely how many employees were killed or injured by the shooter. Classified as a “domestic dispute within the workplace,” this act of violence doesn’t seem to appear to be related to Emcore’s business or recent patent infringement rulings.

Emcore shooter ends up attacking Albuquerque offices

The Albuquerque shooting at the Emcore offices appear to have been carried out by a previous employee. At 9:29 a.m. local time, the 911 call reported that there were “multiple people injured.” Police officers on the scene found two to five individuals dead on the scene and at least four more have been transported to local hospitals. With a self inflicted gunshot wound, the suspected shooter was found dead on the scene.

Albuquerque shooting considered a ‘domestic workplace dispute’

As reported by police on the scene, the Albuquerque shooting was probably a “domestic workplace dispute.” This means that a domestic dispute between the shooter and his wife had been taken into the Emcore offices. There are no reports yet as to what the domestic situation of the shooter or his wife was. The shooter’s wife presently works at Emcore while he was a previous employee. There is no word as to the condition of the shooter’s wife.

Emcore with business difficulties

The office where the Albuquerque shootings took place, Emcore, is actually the main headquarters of an embattled fiber optic and solar manufacturing company. On the same day as the Albuquerque shootings, Emcore was barred from importing some fiber optics. The U.S. International Trade Commission ruled in May that some of Emcore’s technology violated a patent. Today, the U.S. Trade panel barred the company from importing the products that infringe a patent owned by competitor Avago Technologies.
